The Connecticut Department of Transportation received the President’s Transportation Award for completing the nation’s first Multimodal Section 106 Programmatic Agreement. This groundbreaking accomplishment streamlines historic preservation reviews for federally funded transportation projects and strengthens coordination across multiple modes. Working closely with FHWA, FTA, FRA, and the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office, the Department expanded earlier agreements to include transit and rail, allowing direct consultation with the State Historic Preservation Office and faster application of preservation guidance. The agreement accelerates critical infrastructure improvements, supports safer and more accessible communities, and sets a national example for innovation in transportation policy and cultural stewardship.
