Transportation TV News Update brings you coverage of the Feb. 13, 2018 groundbreaking for the new $441 million Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge project. The bridge is part of the first phase of the nearly $1 billion South Capitol Street Corridor improvement plan which is the largest construction project in DC history. Mayor Muriel Bowser welcomed several dignitaries to the event including US Representatives Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Steny Hoyer (D-MD). When completed the Capitol Street Corridor improvement plan will include a new at-grade traffic oval east of the river, and a new diamond interchange on the Suitland Parkway at Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue. The newly redesigned Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge will be wider and built parallel to the old one crossing the Anacostia River and connecting Southeast and Southwest neighborhoods to downtown Washington. The bridge will also include a two-way crossing dedicated for pedestrians and cyclists with a median blocking vehicular traffic.
