AASHTO’s Transportation TV is launching the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) video series to advance highway safety strategies for eliminating the alarming number of deaths and injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes annually. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 9,560 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the first quarter of 2022, an increase of about 7% versus the same quarter in 2021. This TZD video series explores how state DOTs support a traffic safety culture that advances the TZD national strategy. In this first installment, Transportation TV highlights a crash simulation staged by the Maryland Department of Transportation, NHTSA, and the Baltimore County Maryland Police Department – a simulation designed to be a sobering reminder that, even at low highway speeds, crashes can result in severe injuries or fatalities for unbuckled drivers and passengers.
