The Utah Department of Transportation received the Frances B. Francois Award for Innovation for its pioneering use of LiDAR detection to protect vulnerable road users. Since 2021, UDOT has collaborated with research partners to study high resolution LiDAR technology and its ability to capture detailed movement at intersections. This work has advanced national understanding of how to identify pedestrians and cyclists in real time and how to use that information to improve safety. Utah’s early leadership has supported better signal timing, targeted safety improvements, and integration with Connected and Autonomous Vehicle systems to help alert drivers. With installations now active at twenty five intersections across the state, UDOT has become a national model for proactive solutions that support the goal of zero crashes, zero injuries, and zero fatalities.
