The Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Department of Transportation received the President’s Transportation Award for their joint initiative Empathy at the Intersection. This innovative program immerses transportation professionals in the perspectives of vulnerable road users and fleet operators through mobility aid navigation, bus simulators, and visibility exercises. Developed with partners including the MIT AgeLab, the UConn T2 Center, and MAPFRE Insurance, the experience blends real world scenarios with empathy based learning that strengthens safety, design, and public engagement practices. Since 2024, the initiative has expanded to national events and earned recognition for changing how transportation agencies approach planning and awareness. It stands as a strong example of human centered innovation that supports AASHTO’s mission and values.
